A sadness while listening to Roxy Music

At those times when I, like some cultural conservatives, think that America has lost itself to decadence, what strikes me is what a joyless, tired, commercial, and styleless decadence it has chosen.

Well, the locus classicus of stylish decadence would be Byron. At one time I would have liked nothing better than to have been called "mad, bad, and dangerous to know."

But even something shallower and more recent - the world of Waugh's Vile Bodies...

perhaps, the absolute vulgarity of things without any sort of style is the point. After all, in 'this day and age of modern civilization', we have to reach new points of the absurd, decadent, and STUPIDness humanity is so much a broad representative of.
